After his wife has left him, the dedicated veterinarian, Dr. Quirin Engel, moves to the country. He is uncompromising in serving the well-being of animals first and foremost and so has trouble to be accepted. In the small town of Hinterskreuth, Dr. Quirin Engel is building a new life after his wife Angelika decided to leave him. His two children, Anja and Sebastian, are crazy about his new veterinary practice and visit their father and his animals as often as possible. The children find support from their young-at-heart grandmother, Gerlinde, who sticks to her son-in-law. Gerlinde helps with the practice's furnishings and works there as a receptionist.

It will not be easy for the new country vet to find acceptance. He quickly makes an enemy of Hallhuber, the influential large farmer. Warned by Dr. Ann-Marie Polenz, a single, attractive doctor, Quirin discovers bacteria in the milk of Hallhuber´s cows. Quirin Engel is not the type to let himself be bribed or to hush something up. Quirin's efforts to assist Marlies Goil's "Noah's Ark", a home for all kinds of abandoned, exotic animals, is viewed with suspicion in the village. Interestingly, Angelika is not exactly indifferent to the fact that several single women are interested in Quirin.

The veterinarian soon has his hands full. Dr. Engel drives from farm to farm in his mobile practice, a specially equipped bright-red pick-up. He fights for the life of a drugged racehorse, stops illegal animal transports, and prevents the illicit addition of hormones to animal feed. He does not even shrink back from kidnapping an entire herd of cows in order to do what´s right. At their regular gathering in the pub, the farmers agree to give Quirin a warning because this new animal doctor does not play by their rules. But they have not taken into account how clever Quirin Engel really is.
