For more than twenty long years Marianne Brandt almost exclusively filled the role of housekeeper, wife and mother. But now Marianne has just had about enough. Having successfully survived the trauma of a recent divorce, she really wants to seize the opportunity of giving in her notice as a mother and from now on she is looking forward to standing on her own two feet - even if it means having to take on a cleaning job. However taking the step into one's own new life is easier said than done. For, after all, it cannot be forgotten that her children, Nina and Oliver - although they are grown-up - are still tied to their mother's apron strings and they still seem most reluctant to fly the family nest. Where else can you enjoy all kinds of benefits and services more conveniently than in the comfort of your mother´s home and at no charge?
And the last straw is that Lotte, her mother-in-law who considers herself to be too youthful for the old people's home, also has plans to hang her hat at Marianne's. She is relentless in her endeavours to have her son, Theo, in other words Marianne's ex-husband, return to the family home despite the fact that he has just - typical of men in their late 40s - fallen in love with a smart, attractive blonde. The boat really starts to rock when Marianne also falls in love with her new boss, the lawyer Jan König who is regarded as an arch rival by the rest of the family. The general feeling is that a mother primarily has to be there to serve and look after the family! And are mothers, after more than twenty years of service, entitled to the privilege of leading their own lives, let alone allowed to fall in love?
Of one thing Marianne is certain: the stay-at-home clan must leave the nest and finally learn to get by without her. In her efforts to achieve this aim, she is helped by her best friend, Inge Hertel, a woman who does not set great store by issues revolving around "family matters". Marianne never loses sight of this objective, even if it sometimes appears to be the case ...
